But it wasn’t until the unfortunate loss of my Lab mix named Rajha of 13 years who sadly passed away in June 2009 that “Changed My Life”. After her passing I realized more then ever that I wanted to work with animals. With that being said I started working for animal hospitals, kennels/boarding facilities and pet stores. What I realized is that not All Dogs and Cats do well being in a kennel or in a boarding facility. It is really heart breaking to see what an impact these places can have on your beloved family pet, from loss of appetite to excessive barking & anxiety and unfortunately even in some cases the Loss of your beloved family friend. From my experience in working in these places the Safest and Happiest place for your family pet to be is at their Own Home.

Walk-My-Pooch is the alternative to kennels and boarding facilities. I can take care of any Dog or Cat Big or Small along with Fish, Turtles, Birds & Rabbits. Some places will charge you extra for Bigger Dogs but I don’t discriminate I feel that all animals regardless of there Size all deserve that same Love, Care and Attention so why should it cost more. Melissa grew up with her two brothers in a small town along the Delaware River in New Jersey. There she developed her love and compassion for animals. Growing up Melissa had a unique interest in exotics, mainly rodents. Since she was young she either had a rabbit or a rat as a pet.
After high school Melissa joined our world’s finest Navy. She served as an electrician’s mate onboard the USS Detroit (AOE-4). While in the military she received a Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbons (2), Battle “E” Ribbons (2), National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Award. Melissa served four honorable years of service and left the Navy as a Petty Officer Third Class.
Later on she attended Burlington County Institute of Technology receiving a Certificate in Veterinary Assistant Program. This certificate helped her obtain her first job as an assistant with Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. From assisting she quickly learned and became a trained technician specializing in surgery and recovery.
Since moving to Long Island, Melissa has worked at Long Island Veterinary Specialist in Intensive- Care Unit and Recovery. Melissa had also worked as an assistant at Manetto Hill Animal Hospital.
Currently Melissa is attending Suffolk Community College pursuing an Associates in Arts and Science Degree and eventually major in Biology specializing in Veterinary Science. And after 6 years out of the military, she will rejoin the Naval Reserves out of Amityville.
Melissa loves to spend her free time with her 3-year-old pit bull Gia, and her 9-year-old Dutch rabbit Shugga. “ My animals are my babies!” says Melissa, “They truly make me who I am.” Another passion of Melissa’s is bringing awareness and education to BLS (breed specific legislation), and petitioning for stricter laws and harsher punishments for animal abusers. “Every animal has a heart and soul, and deserves to be treated kindly.”
Kristin is a Long Island native, born in Plainview then moved during her early childhood years to her current residence in Huntington with her parents and younger brother. Her attraction to animals began as a toddler, riding her first horse at the age of 2, and has been growing exponentially ever since. In addition to horseback riding, Kristin spent most of her adolescent years on the volleyball court playing on her high school team, local travel team, and participated in the Empire State Games over the summer.
After high school, Kristin attending Binghamton University on a volleyball scholarship where she remained a student athlete for one season, after which she chose to focus on her education. She remained at Binghamton for three years until transferring to Mercy College to be closer to home. While at Mercy, she began working for a local animal hospital as a veterinary assistant. After graduating with a BS in Psychology, Kristin moved back home to Long Island and worked at North Shore Animal Hospital in Queens for a year. Kristin left the hospital to return to school, where she is preparing to follow the path that she had known she would take since she was a little kid: to be a veterinarian.
Kristin is currently enrolled at Farmingdale University, completing the pre-requisites required for veterinary school admission. She is planning on completing her coursework by next spring and hopes to be an official veterinary student by the following fall school year. Aside from school, Kristin enjoys spending time with her two cats Theo and Zoe and cockatiel Pearl, all of whom were rescued.
A recent graduate from Walt Whitman High School, Taylor is now in college with thoughts of pursuing a career in criminal justice. His interest in dogs came at an early age and he now spends his time at home with his family pet Cordelia, a Jack Russell Terrier. Once, when driving with a friend, Taylor stopped and rescued two beagles abandoned on the Northern State Parkway. While his friend drove from agency to agency, being turned down because "the animals were not in our jurisdiction," Taylor provided aid and comfort to the two emaciated & wounded pups for over four hours until a responsible shelter in Babylon came and rescued them. "I felt that I had to help them, I had to see it through," Taylor said, "they didn't need pity, they needed active compassion."
Since then Taylor has found comfort and loves helping and working with animals. He is now an official Walk My Pooch-Pal and we are proud to have him on our staff.
